Archos 7 Internet Media Tablet Bundle!
w/ DVR Station, Case, and Bonus Software!
When I first saw the Archos 7
Internet Tablet it was
love at first sight. I'm a gadget
freak that has been looking for the
holy grail of multimedia devices
since the first iPod arrived on the
scene years ago. The Archos 7 is the
closest to perfect that I ever
found. The big 7" touchscreen
and massive 320GB
hard drive were the main selling
points for me. Add in great file handling,
remote capability, Wireless WiFi,
Hi-Def video output via the add-on
DVR docking station (included),
FLASH support, great battery
life, photo frame options, etc. etc.
- the Archos 7 was so
feature-packed I just had to have
it! I bought it about a year ago and
its been a mainstay in my home
audio/video setup since then. I've
even taken it out to my local coffee
shop a few times in its nifty
leather case with integrated stand.
It has served me well, but now I've
added a dedicated media server to my
setup and the Archos is cool, but no
match for an iPad as a casual
portable media delivery device.
Somebody should be putting this
amazing device to good
use.
I've got the whole package - the
Archos 7, the DVR Station w/HDMI
output, and a really nice leather case. I'll include a CD with the
optional software I purchased for
it... Archos Game Pack #4, Cinema
Plug-In, Podcast Plug-In. I also
have a folder-full of FLASH-based
games which run on it too!
There is a down side. Archos makes
great technology, but their awful
customer support is legendary. This
tablet runs Linux and I've had to do
a couple factory resets on to fix
some freeze-ups. I've upgraded the
firmware to the latest version and
it's been stable for a while, but in
good conscience I would not recommend
that a novice user purchase this.
It's a true geek toy in my
estimation. If you're comfortable
with that - this thing is for you.
It's in great condition. There's
some minor scuffing on the rear of
the unit from casual use, but it
otherwise looks new. I installed a
removable screen protector which I'm
leaving on. I have all of the
original packaging and accessories.
Everything is pristine.
The Archos 7 features a 7" touchscreen capable of displaying 16
million colors. It handles a wide
variety of video and audio formats. It
has
stereo speakers flanking the
display, a 3.5mm headphone jack,
hard buttons for power & volume. The
included Archos DVR Station
accessory gives you full DVR
capability and hi-def HDMI output
(s-video & composite too!) to your TV. The remote with
keypad allows you to browse the
Archos on your big screen from you
sofa!
The huge 320GB internal hard drive
handles quite a bit of media, but
the Archos can also stream media
from other UPnP devices as well. It
has built-in
WiFi 802.11b/g and the excellent
Opera web browser features Flash
support (take that iPad). The browser is
a pleasure to use in conjunction
with the large, 800 x 480
resistive touch screen. The
touchscreen is optimized for
fingertip control, but I found using
a stylus was much more accurate for
sites with small text links - that's
just a personal preference thing.
One note of caution, this thing is
NOT light. At 23 ounces you
get tired of holding it after a
while. Thankfully
there is a
built-in kickstand that pops out
from the back, and the leather case
I'm including also has a stand
feature.
The Archos
7 supports UPnP (streaming supported media files
from a computer on your network over WiFi), has
upgradable firmware (it can check for
new versions and download them directly to its
hard drive), plays desktop YouTube videos, Daily
Motion and several WebTV channels. It also
includes a POP3/IMAP email
client that can send and retrieve email via
WiFi.
On the PC
interface side, the Archos 7 features a mass storage mode so you can
use Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux to transfer
files to and from the device, USB 2.0 Host
functionality with the included
DVR Station (this means you can plug in a flash
drive or digital camera and transfer files
directly to
the Archos), and MTP mode for Windows Media Player
sync/transfer.
By far, the
included DVR
station is one of the most useful accessories
for ANY portable media device I have ever seen.
It
turns your Archos into a high quality DVR that
records TV in DVD quality and features a full
compliment of outputs (RCA, S-Video, Composite,
HDMI, SPDIF) to connect it to your home theater
setup. The unit can also control your
cable/satellite box and there's an
on-screen TV guide that makes it easy to record
TV shows. Video
playback quality is excellent and the Archos
automatically resizes and stretches video to
fill the screen.
As
if that wasn't enough, the Archos
7 also handles PDF's very well, it supports
FLASH-based games, and of course it can store
and display tens of thousands of photos in JPEG, PNG, BMP
or TIFF formats. The
Image Browser is responsive even when the device
is loaded with hundreds of large photo files.
For
portability buffs, the
Archos 7
can handle up to 10 hours of video playback or
39 hours of audio playback on a
single battery charge! Throw this in its very
protective case and it makes an ideal travelling
companion.
Note: The included plug-in charger will charge
the unit much quicker than the USB-tethered
charging.
